Jerash Jordan

Despite Jerash being known as the Pompeii of the East I was not ready for the scale of the site, even the entry gate built to honour the Emperor Hadrian.  Jerash is widely regarded as the best-preserved city of the Decapolis, a confederation of Ten Roman Cities dating from the 1st Century. The state of preservation of the whole site was amazing and even though there were large numbers of people there they mostly blended into the backgrounds of the huge buildings which included a hippodrome, two theatres, a huge plaza and many other delights.
In one of the Theatres a group of retired Jordanian army soldiers were playing bagpipes and drums, which they had picked up from the time when the British had the protectorate of Jordan between the wars.
