Tunisian Adventure – Book Complete

TA-Small-001 After our trip to Tunisia in February, I have finally finished my book of the journey.  After seven hectic days,  in weather which ran from pleasantly warm to snowing,  we saw far more of life in Tunisia, than many who go to Hammamet to lie on the Beach.

Happiness is a POTD

Happiness is a lollipop

It’s been a good while since I last got a Photograph of the Day at the Photography Cafe,  but I was delighted to get one today with an image titled “Happiness is a Lollipop”, from our visit to Tunisia last week.

We visited a Troglodyte house in Matmata, where a woman lives with her 5 children. The house has some electricity via a solar panel, with a small TV in one of the rooms off the central courtyard and a piped water supply to the front of the building. The youngest of the children grabbed the bag of lollipops our guide brought and was working his way through them, even though I suspect he was supposed to be sharing them.

Jane’s POTD is like a quick trip to the location. In one image we have all the elements that describe living at that location. By having the subject so strongly off-centre we become more focussed on the empty walls and are given a sense of how little there is within the home.

Splendours of Jordan

We have just returned from a 7 day holiday to Jordan and had a fantastic time visiting the sites.

You can find out more about our trip in our Photo Book or check out our Jordan Gallery, with a few selected images.

Photolycia Holiday Review

Stephen and I have recently returned from a wonderful trip to Turkey with Photolycia, where we spent a hectic week in the company of professional photographer Faruk Akbas.

Our select group were given opportunities to photograph both the places and faces of Turkey, with an excellent photographer whose passion for both the subject and the people was unbounded. Coupled with superb accommodation and food, the trip although fairly expensive was worth every penny.

A couple of words of warning:

  1. Take lots of storage cards (two of us used 4×4Gb and 3×2Gb cards in 5 days)
  2. Be prepared to walk over rough ground and end up lying on the floor for a good angle
  3. Don’t expect too much time to process photographs, even eating is something you might need to make time for.

The whole trip was well planned and executed and with Faruk’s eye for light and texture the quality of the photographs we were able to obtain was beyond what I had hoped for from the holiday. Although this is not a “full on” photography course, but rather a holiday with photo opportunities, Faruk takes great pleasure in helping you shoot the subjects you want and helping you to improve the composition and lighting of the subjects.

It’s a good idea to have a grasp of your camera functions before you go, you really need to know how to set your camera’s aperture, ISO and how to switch modes quickly. Practice before you go, you don’t want to miss a shot. It’s also worth making sure you have a “fast” standard lens, as for us at least we did a lot of shoots in doors, handheld, so a faster lens really helps.
